 What is Bell’s Palsy?

Bell’s Palsy is a condition that causes sudden weakness and or paralysis of the muscles of facial expression due to injury of the facial nerve, usually occurring on one side but sometimes occurring on both sides of the face. Though the actual cause is unknown, experts believe viral infections may be the cause of most cases of Bell’s Palsy.

What are the symptoms of Bell’s Palsy?

Symptoms include weakness on one side of the face, inability to make facial expressions or drooping facial expressions. Symptoms can last several weeks to several months, but most cases of Bell’s Palsy improve. However, a small percentage of patients do not fully recover resulting in abnormal interconnection of nerve fibers supplying the muscles and causing asymmetric and uncoordinated movement during facial expression. This is called Synkinesis.

How is Bell’s Palsy diagnosed?

Bell’s Palsy can be diagnosed through Clinical Diagnosis, Neuroimaging and EMG/NCV. Dr. Bello can perform EMG/NCV in our office.

Neuromuscular Retraining for Bell’s Palsy

For long suffering patients of Bell’s Palsy with permanent symptoms, muscle retraining may help improve quality of life by retraining the facial muscles to produce coordinated movements.
